So What are Parabens Exactly?
Parabens are a group of chemical preservatives that have been shown to disrupt normal hormone function. Parabens are estrogenic. In other words, they mimic the function of naturally occurring estrogen. A recent study published by the Journal of Applied Toxicology* has found parabens in breast cancer tissue, which has caused alarm about the use of parabens in cosmetics and skin care.
So Why are Companies Still Using Parabens?
Parabens are the most widely used preservatives for skin care in the United States. Many companies view it as "too costly" to switch their formulas so instead of doing the right thing, they attempt to downplay the dangers parabens pose. Many companies will claim that the level of parabens used in skin care is not enough to cause any harmful effects. We use many products everyday for years. Exposure may occur in small doses, but many of these harmful chemicals accumulate in the body. There are any number of natural alternatives that are just as effective as parabens.
