The Bounty of the Bee

The Hive Five™

Honey: Honey is a natural antibacterial agent and helps restore the skin's natural acid mantle. It contains enzymes that produce hydrogen peroxide, a substance effective in killing a variety of bacteria, fungi and viruses. It releases the hydrogen peroxide gradually, preventing the tissue damage caused by antiseptics. Honey also has anti-inflammatory capabilities, soothing red and swollen skin, a characteristic that may be due to its high quantity of antioxidants and amino acids. There are a number of reasons for honey's anti-microbial properties including its high sugar content, which limits the amount of water available to micro-organisms for growth; its relatively high acidity (low pH); and its low protein content, which deprives bacteria of nitrogen needed for growth. This in conjunction with its ability to release hydrogen peroxide at a slow release rate make it a potent bactericidal and fungicidal. There are also unknown factors for certain antibacterial properties.

In clinical studies certain honeys were used on infected lesions not responding to standard antibiotic and antiseptic therapy. It was found in almost all of the cases to be very effective in rapidly clearing up infection and promoting healing.

Royal Jelly: Substance secreted in the digestive tube of worker bees. A powerful nutrient high in amino acids, minerals and vitamins A, B, C and E. Very soothing and moisturizing to the skin. The food of the queen Bee. This substance makes the Queen Bee live 50 times longer than the normal bee. It has very strong rejuvenating effects upon the skin.

Propolis: Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-acne, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities in addition to its wound healing, epithelial and micro-circulation stimulation properties and topical anaesthetic effects. It is a plant resin that the bees collect from plant buds and mix with wax, pollen and specific enzymes that the bees produce. Bees cover all parts of the hive with a thin layer of propolis for disinfecting purposes, sealing any cracks or holes and protecting the hive from any bacteria, viruses or fungi. The term "propolis" comes from the Greek words for "before" and "city" and was named this because it was found around the entrance to the hive. Propolis' antibacterial qualities protect the hive. It is used around the entrance of the hive so that each bee must crawl over it to ensure the cleanliness of the hive.

Bee Pollen: Flower pollen that Bees collect for food. Bees use honey for energy, but they need pollen for growth. Pollen contains all essential amino acids, Vitamins A, C, E, D, K, B Complex and Rutin as well as enzymes and coenzymes that nourish the skin.

Beeswax: Transformed from honey by secretion from the bees. Beeswax retains its flexibility and tenacity under greater ranges of temperature than any other mineral, plant or insect wax. Natural thickener and emulsifier. Rich in vitamins and minerals.
